About us

Umhlatuzana Education Fund (UEF) was founded in 2022 to finance projects supporting and enriching basic education in the Durban metro area. Currently, the main project of the UEF is the High School Mathematics Enrichment Programme based at Mariannridge Senior Secondary School. This pilot project run by the Rotary Club of Durban Umhlatuzana began in 2020 with the aim of improving mathematics education in disadvantaged schools in the Durban metro area. The project brings upper level undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal to the school on Saturday mornings to provide supplemental instruction in mathematics. During its first year (2020) the project helped learners preparing for the Mathematics Literacy Matric examination. This effort resulted in raising the pass rate for 57% in the previous year to 83%. In 2021, after an evaluation including input for the tutors and school management, it was decided to start at an earlier age, at 8th grade, so that learners would be able to benefit from the programme over 5 years, from grades 8 through grade 12. Moreover, the goal was set to increase the number of learners opting for the more advanced track leading to the Pure Mathematics Matric leaving exam, which is a pre-requisite for university admission in the STEM subjects, medicine, and a number of other subjects. The work with the 2021 8th grade cohort led to an increase in the pass rate to 96.3%. In 2022 the project is serving two cohorts: the new 2022 8th grade cohort, and the previous year’s cohort, now in grade 9. Each year the project aims, funds permitting, to take on another grade—that is, three grades in 2023, four grades in 2024, and five grades in 2025. UEF seeks to raise the necessary funding for this expansion of the project. Eventually, it is hoped that the model developed and demonstrated by this pilot project can be applied to other schools, either by expanding the present project further, or through other independent initiatives. At present this project is the only project of the UEF, but in the future the UEF may adopt other education related projects.
